Richard Navarro

Friday 5th February, 7.30 pm.
Evocative and uplifting, the music of Richard Navarro takes the folk traditions of melody and storytelling and supercharges them through live looping and improvisation.

As regular tour support for Joan Armatrading, 2015 saw Richard and bassist Nicholas Thurston tour England and Scotland including shows at Leeds Opera House, Brighton Theatre Royal, Edinburgh Fringe-By-The-Sea and numerous smaller venues and festivals across the UK.

The songs – mostly co-written with his double bassist Nicholas Thurston – combine lyricism and sharp social commentary with lush violins, infectious bass lines, trumpets, keyboards and a sprinkling of percussion. Richard’s command of the loop station allows him to seamlessly build spectacular arrangements of his songs live on stage, bringing a dazzling display of musicianship to his songs, which are by turns hooky and hauntingly beautiful.

The band’s live show also features extraordinary visuals including illustrations and animations by bassist Nicholas, specially created for the songs.

Last year’s release, ‘Seabirds’, caught the attention of BBC 6’s James Robins, who describes it as ‘wondrously catchy’, combining ‘elements of folk and jazz with a sprinkling of magic to create an off-kilter mix of gorgeous weirdness.’
